Putting on: E34 540i Rear Subframe and LSD

91

The parts are being bolted as i post this. I have been running the E34 with my old E30 3:73 LSD mounted on the older, smaller E34 rear subframe. How, you ask?, well that’s because i’ve also been using the M20 long-shaft and most other rear drive parts, including the driveshafts, brakes. That is unacceptable but good enough until now. So I recently found a guy who supplied me with the 540i rear axle complete with:

  • 540i Subframe
  • 540i 2:93 LSD
  • 540i 15mm rear anti roll bar
  • 540i Driveshafts
  • 540i Longshaft
  • 540i Ventilated rear brakes

Pretty lucky to have found these parts and are still in supreme condition. Possibly parted from a mint 540i

Thicker anti-roll bar.

Immaculate LSD

Tight Diff

Bigger driveshafts

Larger Longshaft

Rear brakes – Ventilated (not illustrated?)

Let’s see how it drives. I have been having vibration problems from the longshaft as well as embarrassing top speeds. Not to mention rear diff free-play from the E30 LSD

    there’s an immaculate 540i half-cut near me :)

  3. long shaft vibration? damn…that can be hard to rectify. Is yours a cut and past job? When i did my auto to manual conversion, i intially had a modified long shaft. in the end, got an ori. and it has been smooth sailin since.

  4. snchin,

apart from other fixtures like the U bearings and couplings, most of the time, it’s caused by incompetent workshop guys who do not take the trouble to make sure the long shaft is balanced or properly aligned.

yeah, my old long shaft was more of a copy and paste job. Even with the 540i Longshaft, i also had to get the couplings replaced with something that will bolt to my 4 speed auto transmission. i’m surprised that they are different..
